A Legacy Camper’s Perspective: Beautiful Improvements, But Communication Matters”

As a camper myself, I had a lot of positive memories from my younger years at Nock-A-Mixon. The camp had many wonderful qualities, and I appreciated the experiences and friendships I made. However, as I got older, I found that the environment became more challenging, especially for quieter or more shy campers. Some of the social dynamics and established groups made it difficult for everyone to feel fully included, and ultimately I decided to switch camps. I recently toured Nock-A-Mixon again and was happy to see many improvements. The campus and property look beautiful, and it is clear that a great deal of effort and investment has gone into creating impressive facilities and activities for campers. The owners, Speedy and Bernice, were just as warm, welcoming, and cordial as I remembered them from my time there. That said, my experience with communication during the tour process was disappointing. As an alumnus, I had hoped for a level of communication that reflected the personal connection and history I have with the camp. Scheduling the tour was more difficult than expected, even though several tours were canceled on the day we visited. After the tour, I was told that additional information would be sent, but I never received follow-up. For me, communication before enrollment is an important reflection of the overall camp experience. If communication felt this challenging before committing, I questioned whether it would be the right fit for my camper moving forward. Overall, Nock-A-Mixon has many strengths β€” a beautiful property, strong activities, and owners who clearly care about the camp. I hope the communication and camper experience continue to grow alongside the physical improvements, because the foundation for something special is there.
